What Not to Do With Email

Email has become a commonly-used mode of communication and yet, we're still making mistakes with it.  Suzanne Bates of Bates Communication has put together ten tips on what NOT to do with email - including one of my pet peeves "Hit Reply All When Answering a Question Posed by One Person."

Patricia Fripp on Award Acceptance Speeches

Check out this post by Executive Speaking Coach Patricia Fripp

It's full of valuable tips to help you craft an award acceptance speech that is "gracious, grateful and humble." For example, "Whenever you have some advance notice, be sure to ask how long you are expected to speak. The shorter your time slot, the more you will need to practice! When the time comes, look directly at the audience. Never read your remarks. You can walk up on stage with notes, but they should consist of a few bulleted points."

I had a chance to hear Pat Fripp present at the 2009 NSA Convention in Phoenix and she was terrific! She coached audience members on improving their stories and demonstrated that a few changes can make a big difference to a speech. (And she's so well-known and respected in the professional speaker world that she's known as just "Fripp.")

Meeting Facilitation & Meeting Minutes

by Gilda Bonanno LLC

Check out this blog post by business writing expert Lynn Gaertner-Johnston of Syntax Training. She explains why a meeting facilitator should not also be the note taker at the meeting - and I agree.

"The meeting facilitator should not be the meeting note-taker. Two big jobs can't be done well at the same time. I watched this strained effort as a meeting attendee awhile back, when a meeting leader insisted on pausing to record notes. She couldn't write and talk at the same time, so we would sit silently while she wrote and then took up her role as facilitator again."

Blog Carnivals

by Gilda Bonanno LLC

Last week, two of my blog posts were included in Blog Carnivals. What's a Blog Carnival? It's a collection of blog posts on a given topic, all gathered into a blog post called a carnival. It's like a special edition of a magazine, with articles focused on just one area.

For example, my post, "Public Speaking - What's Your Point?" was included in the Career Development Advice Blog Carnival, along with other posts about interview skills and researching your target companies.

And "Know Your Audience" appeared in the Working at Home Blog Carnival

Thanks to internet marketer Kim Roach for introducing me to blog carnivals!
